Square with podium and word processing sculpture - daylight view
Night view

Competition for invited participants: Development of the central square in Volda, Norway. 2004      (Photograph: 2004)

The central market square in Volda has for many years remained a neglected space. See photograph above.

It does not respond to its significant situation, situated between the monumental stone church and an open view to a magnificent fjord landscape.

I proposed actions to be taken on many levels:

- to change the position and direction of trees, parking places, lamp poles and street furniture.

- to remove an existing earth mound,

- to introduce new features: a new street level, a new podium and a "word processing" sculpture.

Opening a continuous space between the church and the fjord landscape   The new market square

The sculpture should be made of steel plates, 4 blades wrought in a spiralling way. The contours were to be lined with bands of light diodes, displaying  series of words and sentences. The text would move slowly around the sculpture in contrasting directions.

It should reflect the important intellectual heritage of Volda, a central place in teaching and studies of language.

The project was not executed.
